AI and Your Career: Career Development, Exploration, and Customization
AI can be an incredible tool to utilize, I’m sure if you are reading this then you have already played around with an AI! No matter if it is Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or any of the other amazing resources out there, know how to use it best on your career journey!
- Start with your own work: Asking AI to create something brand new can remove the personality from a document and many times can add in false or outdated information based on the sources that are utilized to create the Generative AI you are interacting with.
- AI is not always correct: Most AI instances are trained on data from select sources (or groups of data) and it is not always 100% accurate. Be sure to double-check any information that is given by AI in order to ensure its accuracy and relevance.
- AI is biased due to the programmer and code: An AI is biased based on the information provided to it by the developer and will make inferences that are based off that data set. This means that answers from AI will always be biased and will reflect the code that created them.
- Share information strategically: Know that so many of the common AI’s available to consumers use prompt generation and user inputs to train future AI models. With that being said, anything that you type into a generative AI could be used to train future AI programs!
- Generative AI is meant to be conversational: Conversations can build on each other and provide further information through a thread. This conversational model does create some narrowing of information based on previous responses which is the advantage of diving deep on a particular thread of messages.
- Review any materials made with AI assistance with a Career Catalyst: Any documents or resources created with the help of Generative AI for employment, applications, or searches should be double checked to ensure accuracy.
Do Your Research and Stay Informed
Every Generative AI works a little bit differently depending on who created it, update frequency, and additional formation. While some are being constantly updated (Paid version of ChatGPT), others are no longer being updated and may give information that is either out of date or no longer applicable (Free version of ChatGPT). Know that information present is not always accurate and sometimes with enough convincing, you can convince the AI
The Importance of Prompt Generation
How you talk to a generative AI can make all the difference! The format for asking a question can absolutely help to give more context and provide more relevant information. You can ask generative AI to behave like a certain role or ask it to behave with a certain set of concrete information which will help to navigate a more specific result. For Example:
- “Is my resume a good fit for a government job” vs.
- “Do I use enough skills?” vs. Act as an HR Manager. An applicant submits their “Resume” for this posting “Job Posting”. Do they meet the skill requirements?
