Title: Digital Interpretation Individual Placement

Location: C&O Canal National Historical Park Headquarters in Williamsport or Cumberland, MD

Dates: June 2025 – June 2026 (52-week term)

Pay: $650/week ($400/stipend + $250/housing allowance) paid biweekly plus health benefits

Status: This is a full-time, temporary, AmeriCorps national service position. Part-time remote eligible.

Appalachian Conservation Corps:

Our Individual Placement program works to connect young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations.

Individual Placements gain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, as well as provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.

Position Details

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park welcomes an estimated 1 million visitors a year on our digital platforms. The Digital interpretation Individual Placements will help connect to these visitors and expand the parks reach through creative content, adding accessibility features to existing content, as well as support some in-person interpretation efforts during the “peak season” at the park.

The Digital Interpretation Individual Placements (IP’s) will work with National Park Service staff to enhance and expand on outreach, with the primary focus being digital media. The IP’s will work on the park’s website, app, social media, develop and update videos, and graphic design. The interns will also have the chance to collaborate with other park Individual Placements and staff doing in-person interpretation at the visitor center and in programs.

Responsibilities include but aren’t limited to:

  • Work within the Interpretation, Education, and Volunteers division to provide fully-accessible interpretation and customer service.
  • Use Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, and social media platforms to develop and update digital media.
  • Assist interpretive staff and volunteers at the parks visitor center and outdoor pop-up programs.

This opportunity is meant to provide knowledge and experience that allow for future success in the field. The interns will gain skills in 21st Century Interpretation, include ACE techniques; customer service; digital media (video, photography, and creative writing); as well as training in safety, diversity, and career-building within the Federal government.

General Qualifications:

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 21 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.

  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record

  • Basic computer skills
  • Communication skills

  • $7,395 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award upon successful completion of 1700 hour service term (award amount varies based on length of commitment and can be used for paying off federal student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college)

  • Non-competitive eligibility when applying to federal jobs through the Public Lands Corps Hiring Authority
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest payoff

  • Uniform shirts and other necessary safety equipment is provided
  • On-the-job training
  • Additional subject-specific trainings may be offered
  • Depending upon the academic institution and program, this position may fulfill internship requirements
  • Professional development opportunities (mentorship, resume support, alumni listserv, etc.) and exposure to natural resource career paths
