Why should you participate in an internship?

  • To gain out-of-class experience; taking what you've learned in the classroom and applying it in the world of work.
  • To build skills and acquire an understanding of the demands of a particular career field.
  • To decide if this type of work is a good fit for you.
  • To increase your marketability with employers or graduate schools.
  • To enhance your confidence in your abilities.
  • To begin building a professional network.

Career Services highly recommends that students complete at least one internship during their college careers. Relevant volunteer experiences or part-time jobs are also considered valuable ways to extend your knowledge beyond the classroom and build transferable skills.

  • Meet with a Career Services professional to help you identify what type of internship you want and how to search for it.
  • Online Internship Resources - Search for an internship using these recommended links and contact our office for passwords.  Also includes links to summer jobs and adventures.
  • Search by Major - Click on any OWU major and find relevant internship links.
  • OWU LinkedIn networking site - Join the OWU site and connect with over 800 alumni.
  • Columbus Internships - Sponsored by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, you can search this database by field of interest or name of employer.
  • Spotlight on Careers - Contains internship links in a variety of career fields.
  • VAULT - Extensive online library includes current information on many different fields.
  • OWUNetworking - Contact alumni in different career fields and in varied locations; check with Career Services to obtain a list and contact information.
  • On-site Library - Career Services' on-site library includes hard copy internship guides.
  • Participate in Career Fairs & Networking Events
    • OWU Career Fair & Graduate/Professional School Expo - held on-campus each fall, this event includes employers seeking to fill internship positions, as well as full-time and summerjobs.
    • OFIC CareerFest - This career fair is held every spring semester in Columbus; over 100 employers participate to talk with students about internships and jobs.
    • Work Chicago - Several Chicago employers invite student applicants for interviews in Chicago - offered spring and fall semesters.
    • Munch & Mingle - OWU alumni return to campus to network with students.
    • Internship Panel - Held in the spring semester, current OWU students discuss their internship experiences.
    • Other events to be announced.
